Feedback Strategies

Image
The first article I read was  The Difference Between Praise and Feedback .  I found this article to be very interesting because I did not hold the same opinions as the author. The article claims that parents should praise more on the actual work that went into something a child did rather than tell the child how good their work is. However I believe that you should praise the child for both. Of course you should tell your child that you are proud of their effort, but if that is all you ever say that will make the child think that their final result is not worthy of praise. It is like giving a backhanded compliment and saying, "Well at least you tried really hard." This would definitely damage my self-confidence. The article also says that a parent should not praise their child for every thing that they do because the child may think that in order to be love, they must do chores. It also said that a parent should be constantly expressing their love for their child no matter w

Week 3 Topic Research: Love Stories

Image
The first story I think I could use is the story of Prince Nala and Princess Damayanti. This story reads much like fairytale, which is definitely the approach I want to take. The prince and princess marry and have two children, but then the prince loses everything and everything becomes very complicated. I like the nature of this story because while it has the sweet romance and fairytale plot, it also includes struggle and complications. I think I could easily write a fairytale gone wrong like this one.  I could also use the love story of Rama and Sita. Their love story is like a love at first sight story. Although this story centers around their love, it also tells the tale of how they were sent into the forrest for 14 years. Sita gets kidnapped and Rama has to rescue her. In the end, Rama is crowned king and Sita is his queen. This is another fairytale-like story that features a beautiful love story while simultaneously featuring struggle and action.  I could also use the Radha Kr

Week 3 Story: Trisha and the Lobsters

Image
Deep down at the bottom of the ocean, Trisha, the queen lobster of Atlantis, longed to find her king. Her parents kept telling her that her time would come, and that they had arranged for all of the strongest lobsters to compete for her heart. As the day came closer, Trisha became worried that her true love would not be among those lobsters.  "But what if I do not love him, mother? What if none of them are my king?" asked Trisha with fear in her eyes.  "My girl, the right man will prove himself to you. You need a strong king who must prove his worth." replied her mother.  On the anticipated day, all of the most esteemed lobster nobles, warriors, and monarchs gather around the kingdom of Atlantis, ready to fight for the most beautiful lobster in all of the ocean. The main competition that would prove which lobster was the strongest was the lifting of the conch shell. The conch sparkled in all of its beauty, laying there at the bottoms of the ocean. It was as large a

Ramayana Reading Notes Part A

Pixabay: Ramayana    Rama Wins Sita -  Main Characters: Rama, Janak, Sita, Vishvamitra  -  The Monarchs, Nobles, and Warriors gathered to fight for Sita's heart -  talks about the history and lavishness of the bow - lots of imagery in the setting  - main plot: Rama bent the bow to win Sita's heart - This would be easy to tell in my own words because the plot is very simple and short  Kaikeyi and Dasharatha  - Main characters: Kaikeyi, Dasharatha, Bharata - Kaikeyi asks her husband to grant her the two wishes he had promised her long ago otherwise she will             drink poison - he agrees and explains he will never be happy again unless he grants her whatever wish she desires - her first wish is for her son, Bharata, to be crowned as King - her second wish is for Rama to be sent into exile - Dasharatha is very sad and scolds Kaikeyi but knows he must grant the wish - she reminds him that if he does not grant her wishes she will kill herself - he was heartbroken and said that

Feedback Thoughts

Image
The first article I read was,  "Why rejection hurts so much- and what to do about it" . This article makes a lot of sense in modern society, especially in regard to social media. New generations have a need for "self-belonging" and conforming to society in order to be liked. Rejection is good but the way people accept that rejection needs to be changed, which this article sought to do. It is better in the long run to build our self-esteem and not let rejection damage it, because in the long run it will help individuals be there true self. Some college students may know the pain of being rejected by a college. Instead of letting it hurt them, they should learn from the experience. Personally, I have experienced rejection in all different types of ways. I have been rejected by jobs, by schools, and by people. However I have used these experiences to shape who I am and become stronger.  "Why It's So Hard to Hear Negative Feedback"  is another article I

Project Topic Brainstorm

Image
I would definitely be interested in doing the topic, “Reincarnation”. I like this topic because it is a concept that has always been of interest to me. I know that the general idea of reincarnation is that after you die, your physical body is gone, but your soul lives on forever in other lives. I would like to read more stories and folktales about this because other than the simple definition, I do not have much knowledge of the concept. I could see myself retelling stories in the form of a short composition or a poem, using animals as my primary  characters.  I would also like to write about “Love Stories” . I have always been a fan of love stories and romanticism. My knowledge of love in Indian culture is rather small, but I am aware that it is quite different from modern love. Every culture has their own standards of love and what is accepted and what is not, and I would be interested in reading tales about how love is depicted in Indian culture. I could see myself retelling love

The Cheetah and the Impala: Week 2 Story

Image
Updated story can be found at: https://sites.google.com/view/carlypotfolio/  A large, fast Cheetah ruled the desert in Africa. He was getting very frustrated because all of the animals kept hiding from him. He was so hungry, and decided that he needed to devise a plan to trap his prey. When he stumbled upon a group of Hares, the Cheetah approached kindly saying, "Hello, Hares I come in peace! I am here to warn you!" "Warn us about what?" asked the Hares.  "The Lions are coming to kill you! I want to protect you! I can get you out of here quickly!" replied the Cheetah.  "Why should we trust you? You want to eat us!" shouted the Hares.  "I have had a change of heart and I want to protect all who live in the desert." lied the Cheetah.  The Hares were far too dumb to understand the Cheetah's deceit and far too scared to think it over. In groups of three, the Hares climbed onto the back of the Cheetah and let him carry them away. However

Week 2 Reading Anthology Notes

The Turtle and the Geese by Ellen C. Babbitt : A Turtle became friends with two geese. The Geese invited him to travel with them to their home, but he did not any wings. They told him they could take him with them if he promised to keep his mouth shut. They brought a stick and told the Turtle to hold on with his mouth and took off flying. The village children mocked the flying Turtle and called it ridiculous, causing him to talk back and let go of the stick and die. The Geese flew on and said that he lost his life because he could not keep his mouth shut.  The Cunning Crane and the Crab by W.H.D Rouse : A Crane promised a group of Fish that he would carry them from a small, hot pool to a beautiful lake. He even took one of the fish to see the lake first! However, when they trusted him to take them to the lake, the Crane ate each and every fish one by one. A Crab then wanted to go to the lake as well, but he was smarter than the Fish. He held onto the neck of the Crane instead of being

Week 2 Reading Overview

Image
I have chosen to read Tiny Tales from the Ramayana. I chose this because I think it is really interesting that our teacher wrote it! In addition, I like that this is a new option for this semester. I love when things are switched up a bit and not just the exact same assignments each semester. I am also interested to see how it is the shortest option while still including more backstory and variations.  The first comic book that caught my attention was Stories of Courage: Jataka Tales of Valour and Victory.  I think it could be really interesting to read different stories of heroic acts. I also really like the illustration on the cover, which is was originally caught my eye. The second comic book that caught my attention was Sukanya: The Princess who Married a Sage.   I really enjoy stories about princesses and goddesses and weddings. I also find the premise of the story interesting, how the princess marries the sage because of an injury she caused him.  The first video that stood out

Time Strategies

Image
The first article that I read for this assignment was Eat The Frogs First Thing in the Morning (And Other Better Work Habits).  This article claimed that we should do the most unwanted task of the day first. This definitely makes sense to me and is something that I already follow in my everyday life. The first thing I do when I wake up is exercise. Immediately after exercising, I do all of my schoolwork for the day. It is not until after these things are completed that I move on to watching TV or spending time with friends. I agree with this article that the best way to ensure a task gets done is by completing it first.  The second article I read was The Psychology of Checklists.  This article focused on how making checklists for small, attainable actions causes us to be more productive and goal-oriented. I have also employed this in my personal life and have found it to be incredibly helpful. I do not write out a physical checklist, but when I wake up in the morning I typically make

Technology Features for this Class

Image
I am definitely no technology expert. I have never had any interest in technology and all of the little online gadgets, however being raised in the 2000s comes with a lot of natural knowledge about technology. I have relied on technology for the majority of my life, especially this last year.  I am familiar with the majority of the technology tools mentioned, the only one I am not familiar with is the word count extension, but I will make sure to set that up. Because of last semester, I am now used to the nature of online classes. This class in particular definitely seems to have a lot more assignments than any other class that I have taken, but online classes typically have a lot of assignments anyway. I definitely do not have any recommendations related to technology, as I am no expert. However I do hope to improve my technological skills through this course!                                                                                Pixy: Computers

My Thoughts on the Assignments for this Course

Image
After reading about what kind of assignments make up this course, I am most intrigued by the storytelling assignments. I think it will be very interesting and fun to write my own stories based off of class readings. This class is definitely very different from any other class I have taken in the past. As a psychology major, I have never taken any sort of creative writing classes or any classes based on stories. I think this will be a lighter subject to focus on. I am also very grateful for all of the extra credit opportunities. This class has a lot of assignments, making it easy to fall behind or not finish on time. The extra credit is like a nice cushion for any stress that pops up during the semester. I like that there are so many different types of extra credit, that way there is something for everyone.  Pixabay: Storytelling

My Thoughts on the Growth Mindset

Image
Watching the assigned videos and learning about Carol Dweck was very interesting to me because I had never heard of her or her ideas before today. In terms of academics, I definitely think that I have a growth mindset. I have always been a good student, however that does not mean that I have not received bad grades or struggled with certain subjects. While I have definitely found myself frustrated when dealing with something that does not come naturally to me, I have always been one to keep trying and push forward, because I know that I can do better. I have also often found myself bored when I am not being challenged. For example, I am currently doing the assignments for this class ahead of time because I have become bored without any schoolwork over the last month. I enjoy being challenged because it keeps me engaged. However on the other hand, I do not think I have a growth mindset in many other aspects of my life. I have often accepted that I am just simply not good at things inst

Introduction to Carly the Future Counselor

Image
Hi! My name is Carly Capulli and I am a junior at the University of Oklahoma. I will be graduating this December, with a major in child psychology and a minor in Spanish. Personally, I think that my major is really interesting. I get to study how the mind works and why people are the way that they are, with a specific focus on children. I absolutely love kids! I have known since I was a child that I would one day work with children in some way, and that has never changed. I have never even changed my major! After attending graduate school, my ultimate goal is to become a trauma counselor for children in the foster care system. Last semester was tough for everyone I can imagine, however I did feel very accomplished in that I achieved A's in every one of my classes, with all of them being fully online. This taught me that I am very self-disciplined and can work on my own quite well.  I do not read much and I hardly have the patience to sit through a movie, but I do have many favorite

My Storybook Favorites

Image
The first storybook that I have deemed as one of my favorites is Animals of the Epics . I thought this storybook was very interesting because the style was so unique. The author is speaking directly to the reader. While this threw me off at first, it actually made reading the storybook much more interactive and enjoyable. I felt like I was apart of the story and not just reading it. I also liked how casual the writing was. I did not feel like I was reading some boring, formal book but instead felt like I was reading something that a friend wrote. I also thought that the focus on reincarnation and animals made the story come to life. Ultimately, this unique style really stood out to me and made me feel like I was in the story.  The second storybook that I really enjoyed was Epic Cooking . I thought it was incredibly creative that the author of this storybook chose to relate each story to a food item, and then turned their storybook into a recipe book. I never would have thought of some

South Carolina, My Favorite Place

Image
Pixabay: Myrtle Beach   I have spent every single summer since I was born in South Carolina. My family has stayed in various beach houses, all in a small community between Charleston and Myrtle Beach. Many of my greatest memories are from that beach. I have often dreamed of getting married on that beach, of buying my own beach house one day and spending summers with my children on that beach. It has always been my favorite place in the world, and I think that it always will be.  Pixabay: Myrtle Beach 2
